RARIFIED LOOK AT REAL LIFE IN A HAREM

This is the 1854 story of the Georgian Princess Anna Chavchavadze and her kidnapper, the famous warlord Imam Shamil, the Lion of Dagestan.  Shamil kept Anna and her children imprisoned in his harem with his three wives for nine months, in order to win his son back from his archenemy, the Russian Tsar.

Set in the Caucasus in 1854, this drama traces the personal encounters in the harem during the clash of civilizations and the competition between Russia and Europe for domination over Asia and the Muslim world:

  • the Murid Wars in the Caucasus,

  • the Crimean War,

  • and the Great Game.
